About the MTCC
The Minor Threats Chess Club is made up of kids in ages 2 through 15 from inner city Philadelphia. The club practices and competes year-round around Philadelphia and increasingly up and down the east coast.
While the MTCC has won many trophies over the years, we value learning and character development more than winning. Indeed, through chess, our kids have learned just as much about themselves and the world, as they have about chess, and through our trips they have experienced a lot of “firsts.” It is our hope that these experiences will help them to develop into capable and confident young people who are unafraid to pursue their dreams.
Thanks to the generosity of people like you, and the hard work of the kids, we have been to the PA State Championships each of the past four years. In addition, we have also been to National Championships in Nashville, TN, Atlanta, GA, Dallas, TX, Columbus, OH, and Louisville, KY.
This year we want to compete in the PA State Scholastic Chess Championships in Lancaster, PA, the High School National Championships in Atlanta, GA, the Junior High National Championships in Indianapolis, IN , and the Elementary National Championships in Nashville, TN.
I estimate that it will cost about $150 for each kid to compete in the State Championships and about $500 for each kid to compete in each National Championship. Ideally, I would like to take about 15 kids to each tournament.
Your donation will make a huge impact on the lives of inner city youth who are eager to achieve great things through chess. A $20 donation would pay for a hotel room for one child. A $50 donation would pay the Nationals tournament entry fee for one child. A $150 donation would cover one child's expenses for the State Championships. A $200 donation would pay for one child's bus ride to a Nationals. A $500 donation would cover one child's expenses for one of the national tournaments.
I hope you will consider helping us to provide these life-changing experiences to our kids. If you would like to know more about what we are doing, please do not hesitate to contact me.
